What makes a data center green?

There has been a lot of discussion in the data center community around “green data centers.” Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have publicly talked about their green data center initiatives. Most of these companies are talking about two approaches to “greening” the data center: 1) reducing the overall amount of power required by improving efficiency/reducing PUE, and 2) using renewable sources of power.

At Vantage, we’ve embraced both of these fronts. On #1, we’ve created some of the highest-efficiency/lowest PUE environments in the industry, with demonstrated PUEs as low as 1.12. On #2, we’ve been aggressive about providing access to renewable sources of power – for example, in our Quincy campus we can offer power provided by clean hydroelectric generation.

As demand for data center infrastructure grows, we think it’s increasingly important that data centers are built in an environmentally responsible way. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this trend.
